FIGHT THE BITE Poster Contest 2008 (Grades 5-6)

A new Poster Contest Co-sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the DEET Education Program in collaboration with The Weekly Reader.

The contest is open to 5th and 6th graders and asks the children to create a poster showing people how to fight the bite of mosquitoes and ticks. Mike Berenstain, co-author of the popular “Berenstain Bears” book series, will be among the judges for the contest. Deadline for submissions is April 4, 2008.

Two winners will be picked from each state (one 5th grader and one in 6th) to receive a $50 bond. Two Grand Prize winners (one from each grade) will get a $1,000 bond and invitation to an awards ceremony in Atlanta this spring (travel expenses included).

More information, including rules and guidelines can be found on the "Fight the Bite" site: http://www.fightthebitecontest.org/.

The CDC also just released a podcast regarding the contest: http://www2a.cdc.gov/podcasts/player.asp?f=8478

Project LEAP

Congratulations to Queshia Bradley, ACE's Education Programs Coordinator, for graduating from the Project LEAP (Leaders Emerging through Ability and Potential) program last week.

Project LEAP is a program put on by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement (http://www.nonprofitadvancement.org/) in which attendees participate in a series of individual and group activities, including training and assessment of leadership skills and roles; activities involving critical thinking and problem solving; participating in a learning circle of peers; and developing a project that encompasses lessons from the series and stretches the participants’ abilities.

Queshia said she thoroughly enjoyed the educational workshops, and the experience to meet and bond with other professionals in the nonprofit field. Great job, Queshia!
